Christmas at Snowshoe

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Christmastime in the Village at Snowshoe feels familiar, but somehow unreal. Like the Christmas town you see in a movie, or the little scene inside your childhood snow globe, except instead of being on a screen or in your hands, you’re in it.

There are twinkling lights everywhere, snow on the walkways and flakes fluttering through the air, people clomping around in ski boots, kids with cocoa, somebody in an ugly sweater, probably somebody else dressed like Santa. It’s festive without you having to work very hard at making it festive, which is kind of the whole point.

At 4,848 feet, Snowshoe already feels removed from regular life. And because we’re an upside-down resort, once you’re at the top, you’re pretty much set for the duration of your stay. The Village, lodging, restaurants, slopes, shops, all of it is right here.

Book the Christmas at Snowshoe package and there can even be a tabletop Christmas tree waiting in your unit when you arrive. Put the presents underneath it, throw your bags somewhere, pile the boots by the door, and that’s that. Christmas just looks a little different this year.

You don’t have to recreate every tradition exactly the way you do it at home. Maybe that’s part of the fun. For a few days, this is where you wake up, open presents, eat, ski, throw snowballs, and make lasting memories.

And there’s plenty happening around the Village to celebrate. Over the years, Christmas at Snowshoe has included tree lightings, gingerbread houses, holiday crafts, painting classes, ugly sweater parties, Santa visits, cocoa, cookies, candy canes and holiday drinks. The details change from year to year, but there’s no shortage of holiday cheer here.

Christmas morning might be the best part.

The slopes are usually pretty quiet early while most people are still inside opening presents, drinking coffee and taking their sweet time getting ready. If you’re the type who wants to sneak out for a few runs first thing, it’s a pretty great morning to do it.

Then everybody starts making their way outside. Families head toward the lifts, kids drag skis through the Village, Santa hats start popping up on the slopes, and every once in a while the big guy himself goes cruising past on a pair of skis.

By midday, the whole mountain is in on it.

There’s more skiing if you want it, food and drinks when you don’t, and après when everybody’s ready to thaw out. Christmas sweaters get a little damp. Gloves get left somewhere they definitely weren’t supposed to. Somebody eats too many cookies. At least one person eats it getting off the lift.

It’s Christmas. Just on top of a mountain.

Even those of us working tend to get caught up in it. The mountain is a winter wonderland, full of people having a good day, and there are certainly worse ways to spend part of Christmas than squeezing in a lap between shifts.

That’s what sticks with you about Christmas here. Not that every little thing went perfectly, but that it was different and special enough to remember.

Years from now, nobody may remember exactly what was under the tree. But you’ll probably remember the year the tree was waiting for you at Snowshoe. The Christmas morning laps. Santa on the slopes. The festivities, ridiculous sweaters, and everyone being together at 4,848 feet.

The presents still get opened.

You just get a memorable, scenic, action-packed Christmas along with them.
